Green Tips for Pet Care

Pets Can Live An Eco-Friendly Lifestyle Too!

If you live in a pet-friendly apartment community, pets can become another member of the family!  Cats and dogs can also gain many benefits from green lifestyle change.  Consider the following:

  1. Switch Your Pet Food: Eating fresh, locally grown food is a component for a green lifestyle for both people and their pets.  Try to buy organic or natural pet foods- though a little more money, you know exactly what your four-legged friend is eating.
  2. Clean Up After Your Pet: This may seem self-explanatory, but always remember to clean up after your pet on walks.  Try to buy bio-degradable bags to scoop up and dispose of any mess.
  3. Remember Recycling: Purchasing sustainable goods for your pets, like toys, collars, and accessories made from recyclable materials is one of the easiest steps to ensuring your pets are going green.
  4. Aim For Natural Pet Care Products: Don't use chemical laced shampoos or beauty products for your pets.  Instead, aim to buy natural grooming supplies.  You can even make your own shampoo from baking soda and vinegar that eliminates odors just as well!
  5. Watch for Ticks: In addition to chemicals in grooming products, there are numerous chemicals and insect and tick repellent.  Especially in the summer, when ticks are abundant, keep a close eye on your pet and promptly remove any ticks you find.
If you currently do not own a pet, but are thinking of adding one to your family, the act of adopting one of the numerous animals in shelters is also a step towards living a green life!
