The Power of the Sun, Part I

Facts about the Sun

Now that it is summer, many people are inclined to spend more time outdoors: attending barbecues, swimming in pools, or relaxing in the Sun.  Next week's blog will detail several green tips for eco-friendly Sun protection perfect for this warm season.  This week, learn some interesting facts about the sun.  As the center of the universe, the Sun affects many aspects of greenliving and the overall sustainability of the planet.

Did you know?

  1. The Sun is roughly 4.5 billion years old.  Even so, it is only a middle-aged star!  The Sun has enough Hydrogen to burn for approximately five billion more years.
  2. The Sun is obviously a big star- so big that over 900 thousand planets the size of Earth could fit inside.  Though, the Sun is considered a mid-sized star versus other suns.
  3. One day, the Sun will grow so large that it will encompass the Earth and the other planets around it (Mercury and Venus).  However, this will happen in over 100 billion years.
  4. The surface of the Sun is over five thousand degrees Celsius, which equals a little less than 10 thousand degrees Fahrenheit.
  5. Solar energy is a green energy form that is created when solar panels pick up Sun's rays and convert the sunlight into direct current electricity.
Check back next week to read more about the Sun and green Sun care!
