What Can You Do About Plastic Pollution?

Plastic pollution hurts plant and animal life.

Taking Action

Last week, we blogged several facts about plastic pollution.  Plastic pollution is just as common as any other type of pollution; causing horrible problems for the environment.

Ways to combat plastic pollution are:
  • Choose to reuse when it comes to shopping bags. Cloth bags are available at almost every retail store at low prices.
  • Reduce everyday plastics such as sandwich bags and juice cartons by replacing them with a reusable lunch bag or box.
  • Bring your own mug or cup with you to coffee shops or restaurants that let you use them, which is a great way to reuse your own products and not waste any unnecessary cups.  If you have to buy a new cup, try to re-use it more than once.
  • Provide accessible recycling bins in your home.  Especially if you invited guests into your home, be sure to set out and label a separate container just for recyclables.
  • Learn recycling dos and don'ts!  Not everything can be recycled.  If you must use plastic, try to choose #1 (PETE) or #2 (HDPE), which are the most commonly recycled plastics. Avoid plastic bags and polystyrene foam as both typically have very low recycling rates.
These facts were re-purposed from the article "22 Facts About Plastic Pollution (And 10 Things We Can Do About It) from EcoWatch at ecowatch.com.
