What is Bike To Work Day?
Sponsored by Commuter Connections and the Washington Area Bicyclist Association, this annual event encourages commuters to bike to and from work to celebrate the many benefits of bicycling. Participants register for the event online to receive an event route and map. During the event, participants are encouraged to stop by several community pit stops for refreshments and raffles to win prizes such as a new bike. This year, the event will take place on May 19.
After the event, participants are encouraged to partner with a "biking buddy," another biker met during the event, to continue to bike to work and enjoy the benefits of biking.
What are the Benefits of Biking to Work?
Four benefits of biking to work include:
1) Creating zero pollutants: Biking is a sustainable way to get to and from work. Unlike vehicles that produce exhaust that can pollute the air and harm plant life and waterways, biking creates no pollutants and leaves no waste in the environment.
2) Commuting an environmentally-friendly way: Biking can be just as reliable as driving a personal car to work or hopping on a form on public transportation, but creates much less damage to the environment. Unlike motorized vehicles, bikes will not damage the ozone layer nor will create lasting effects to the environment.
3) Increasing social interaction and community engagement: In addition to the green benefits, biking can form bonds between neighbors, co-workers, or community members who bike together. Bike To Work Day sponsors encourage attendees to find a bicycle buddy or join a bike convoy led by an experienced bicyclist during the event.
4) Exercising and becoming healthier: Biking is a great way to exercise; the health benefits of bicycling include: decreasing stress, increasing muscle strength and flexibility, increasing cardiovascular health, and more.
