How to Make Your Own Bottle Garden

Instructions On This Green Craft

Last week, our blog detailed several crafts for recycled products.  One craft was turning bottles and other old plastic containers and tubs into a thriving garden.  Read below for step by step instructions on how to create bottle garden:

  1. Select an appropriate container: This really depends on the size of the plant you want.  If you want a small plant, like basil or a small flower, a two liter bottle should suffice.  Bigger plants in turn would require a bigger container, like an old laundry detergent bin.
  2. Cut holes for drainage: Any flower pot has a hole cut on the bottom for drainage.  Do not forget to do this for your bottle garden or the plant will quickly deteriorate.
  3. Decide the type of garden:  Bottle gardens can be a hanging upright, or placed on a vertical or horizontal orientation.  Determining the type of garden you want is necessary so you can cut all containers to match.
  4. Buy soil and plant: Fill the container with soil and the plant.  Be sure to organize a layer of stone at the base of the bottle so it will create a layer between the drainage holes and soil.
  5. Put bottle garden in the sun: Your project is nearly done!  Just be sure to place the bottle garden in a sunny area of your home.  If you have a balcony or patio, you could even place the garden outside.
